About Ukulhas Beach

Ukulhas is a small island in North Ari Atoll that has earned a remarkable reputation as the Maldives' first and most committed eco-island. In 2009, it became the first island in the country to establish a comprehensive waste management system, and its recycling and environmental initiatives have won international recognition. This environmental consciousness extends to its tourism approach — Ukulhas is a pioneer in sustainable local island tourism, showing that the Maldives can offer world-class beach experiences without the environmental footprint of large resort developments.

The bikini beach on the island's northern end is widely considered one of the most beautiful public beaches in the Maldives. A long sweep of pure white sand curves around a lagoon of impossibly clear turquoise water. The beach is meticulously maintained by the community, with palm-thatched sun shelters, swings, and loungers arranged along the shore. Unlike resort beaches, Ukulhas has a convivial, social atmosphere — locals and tourists share the same stunning strip of sand, creating a warm and welcoming environment.

The snorkeling around Ukulhas is exceptional. The house reef is accessible from the beach and features healthy coral with a rich variety of fish, octopuses, and rays. Manta ray excursions are available during the season (typically August to November), and the island's location in Ari Atoll means whale shark trips to nearby South Ari Atoll are easily arranged. Guesthouses offer comfortable rooms, and restaurants serve fresh Maldivian cuisine alongside international options. Bicycle rental makes it easy to explore the island's tree-lined paths, mangroves, and wetlands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Ukulhas an eco-island?
Ukulhas was the first island in the Maldives to implement comprehensive waste management and recycling. The island has a community-operated recycling centre, plastic-free initiatives, and environmental education programmes. It has won multiple awards for environmental sustainability, including recognition from the United Nations. Tourism on Ukulhas follows sustainable principles, with guesthouses and activities designed to minimise environmental impact.
How does the bikini beach compare to resort beaches?
The bikini beach at Ukulhas is genuinely stunning and rivals many resort beaches in the Maldives. The sand is pure white, the water is crystal clear, and the beach is well-maintained with shelters and seating. The main difference is that it is a shared public beach on a local island, so you will share it with other tourists and locals. Many visitors find it more enjoyable than resort beaches due to the friendly atmosphere and authentic Maldivian setting.
Can I see manta rays from Ukulhas?
Yes, Ukulhas is well-positioned in North Ari Atoll for manta ray excursions. Guesthouses organise trips to manta cleaning stations during the season (typically August to November). Additionally, whale shark trips to South Ari Atoll can be arranged from Ukulhas, though these require a longer boat journey. The island's location makes it an excellent base for marine wildlife encounters.
