Thoddoo is one of the most distinctive islands in the Maldives — an unusually large, circular local island renowned across the country for its agriculture. Unlike most Maldivian islands which rely entirely on fishing and tourism, Thoddoo is the fruit and vegetable garden of the nation, producing the best watermelons, papayas, and bananas in the archipelago. This agricultural heritage gives the island a character entirely different from typical resort Islands, and the beach that wraps around its coast is among the most beautiful in the Maldives.
The bikini beach on Thoddoo's western side is a long, wide stretch of white sand backed by palms and tropical vegetation. The water is crystal clear with a gradual entry, making it suitable for swimmers of all abilities. But the real star of the show is the snorkeling: Thoddoo is famous for its turtle population. Green sea turtles feed on the seagrass beds near the shore, and snorkelers can reliably encounter them just metres from the beach. Guesthouses organise guided snorkeling trips to the best turtle spots, with sighting rates approaching 100%.
Life on Thoddoo offers a genuine window into Maldivian local culture. The island has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, and walking through the settlement reveals fruit farms, a mosque, and friendly locals going about their daily lives. A handful of guesthouses and cafés provide comfortable, affordable accommodation and home-cooked Maldivian meals. The island is also home to a mysterious archaeological mound that may date from the pre-Islamic Buddhist period, adding a layer of history to its natural charms.
Thoddoo is one of the larger local islands, roughly circular with a diameter of about 1.5 km. The bikini beach is on the western side, a short walk from most guesthouses. Sandy paths and concrete roads connect the settlement. Bicycles make it easy to explore the entire island.
From Velana International Airport (MLE), a speedboat takes approximately 90 minutes to reach Thoddoo. Public ferries also operate on certain days of the week at a lower cost. Guesthouses will arrange speedboat transfers for guests. The island is located at the southern edge of the Ari Atoll region.
