About Kuramathi Sandbank Beach

Kuramathi is the largest resort island in the Maldives, stretching 1.8 kilometres across Rasdhoo Atoll, and its crowning glory is the spectacular sandbank at its eastern tip. This natural formation of powder-white coral sand tapers into the lagoon like a brushstroke on a turquoise canvas, creating what many consider the single most photogenic spot in the archipelago. At low tide, the sandbank extends dramatically, offering a surreal feeling of walking on water with the Indian Ocean shimmering on all sides.

Beyond its visual splendour, Kuramathi is a paradise for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. The island is surrounded by one of the healthiest house reefs in the Maldives, easily accessible from the beach. Snorkelers can expect to see reef sharks, eagle rays, hawksbill turtles, and a dizzying variety of tropical fish. The resort's dive centre is among the most experienced in the country, offering access to the famed Rasdhoo Madivaru dive site where hammerhead sharks are spotted during early morning dives.

Kuramathi strikes an unusual balance β€” it is large enough to offer extensive facilities including multiple restaurants, bars, a spa, and a water sports centre, yet the island's dense tropical vegetation and 1.8km length ensure it never feels crowded. Guests can take nature trails through the island's interior, visit the eco centre to learn about Maldivian marine conservation, or simply claim a stretch of the seemingly endless beach and watch the ocean change colour through the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Kuramathi sandbank always visible?
The sandbank shifts and changes shape with the tides and seasons, but it is present year-round. It is most dramatic at low tide when it extends far into the lagoon. The resort staff can advise on the best times to visit the sandbank during your stay for photos and relaxation.
How big is Kuramathi Island?
Kuramathi is one of the largest resort islands in the Maldives at 1.8 kilometres long. It has over 290 villas, 12 dining venues, and extensive facilities. Despite its size, the island maintains a natural, tropical feel with dense vegetation and long stretches of undeveloped beach.
Can I see hammerhead sharks at Kuramathi?
Yes, the nearby Rasdhoo Madivaru channel is one of the best sites in the Maldives for hammerhead shark sightings. Early morning dives (around 6am) between December and April offer the highest chance of encountering schools of scalloped hammerheads. The resort's dive centre runs dedicated hammerhead excursions.
