About Dhigurah Beach

Dhigurah is one of the longest local islands in the Maldives, stretching approximately 3 kilometres from tip to tip with a width of barely 300 metres at its widest point. The result is a spectacular beach that runs the entire length of the island — an unbroken ribbon of fine white sand lapped by crystal-clear Indian Ocean waters. Walking the full length of Dhigurah Beach, with the ocean on both sides and coconut palms swaying overhead, is one of the most memorable experiences in the Maldives.

Dhigurah's fame, however, rests on what lies beneath the surface. South Ari Atoll is home to a year-round population of whale sharks — the world's largest fish — and Dhigurah is the prime base for encountering these magnificent creatures. Dive centres on the island operate daily whale shark excursions, where snorkelers have the chance to swim alongside these gentle giants in the warm, clear waters of the atoll channel. The success rate for sightings is remarkably high, making Dhigurah one of the best places on Earth for this experience.

Despite its growing reputation among marine life enthusiasts, Dhigurah retains a peaceful, village atmosphere. The southern tip of the island, far from the settlement, offers complete solitude — visitors can walk for hundreds of metres without seeing another person. A handful of guesthouses and cafés provide comfortable, affordable accommodation and meals. The island's bikini beach area is spacious and well-maintained, and the house reef nearby offers excellent snorkeling with reef sharks, turtles, and rays regularly spotted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I really see whale sharks year-round?
Yes, South Ari Atoll is one of the few places in the world with a year-round resident population of whale sharks. Sighting rates are high throughout the year, though the best conditions tend to be during the dry season (November–April) when visibility is at its peak. Dive centres report success rates of over 90% on excursions.
Is Dhigurah a good alternative to expensive resorts?
Dhigurah is one of the best value-for-money destinations in the Maldives. Guesthouses offer clean, comfortable rooms at a fraction of resort prices, and the beach is arguably more beautiful than many resort beaches — simply longer and wilder. The whale shark experience alone makes it worth the trip, and it costs far less from a local island than from a resort.
How long is the beach on Dhigurah?
The beach stretches approximately 3 kilometres along the full length of the island. The southern section is the most pristine and secluded, as the settlement is concentrated in the north. Walking the full length and back takes about an hour and is one of the island's great pleasures.
