Bikini Beach on Maafushi Island is the Maldives' most famous public beach, and it has revolutionised travel to this island nation. Before local island tourism opened up, experiencing the Maldives meant booking an expensive private resort. Bikini Beach changed all that — offering a designated area where tourists can swim and sunbathe in Western-style swimwear on a local inhabited island, surrounded by the same turquoise waters and white sand that define the luxury resort experience.
The beach stretches along the western side of Maafushi, facing the setting sun and sheltered by a natural lagoon. The water is calm, shallow, and brilliantly clear, making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling. A colourful coral reef lies just offshore, accessible by a short swim, where visitors can spot parrotfish, butterflyfish, and occasionally reef sharks and turtles. Several dive shops and water sports operators line the beach, offering everything from guided snorkeling trips to jet ski rides and parasailing.
Maafushi itself is a lively island with a growing number of guesthouses, cafés, and restaurants catering to budget-conscious travellers. The atmosphere is social and welcoming, with visitors from around the world mingling on the beach and at the island's waterfront eateries. Despite its popularity, Bikini Beach retains an authentic Maldivian charm — fishing boats bob in the harbour nearby, and the call to prayer drifts across the water at sunset. It is proof that the Maldives dream is accessible to everyone.
Bikini Beach is a public beach with free access. It is a designated tourist area on a local island — outside this zone, modest dress is required. The beach is flat and sandy, easily walkable from most Maafushi guesthouses within 5 minutes.
From Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé, take a public ferry (about 90 minutes, departing daily) or a speedboat (30 minutes). Several guesthouses and tour operators arrange speedboat transfers. Maafushi is one of the most accessible local islands in the Maldives.
