Yonaha Maehama Beach is Japan's crown jewel — an extraordinary 7 km arc of talcum-white sand stretched along the southwestern shore of Miyako Island in Okinawa Prefecture. Consistently ranked as Japan's most beautiful beach, its most arresting feature is the colour of its water: the legendary "Miyako Blue", an almost impossibly vivid gradient from pale aquamarine at the shore through brilliant turquoise to deep cobalt further out. The seabed is entirely white coral sand, without rocks or seaweed, keeping the water dazzlingly clear to depths of several metres.
The beach is shaded by a long row of casuarina trees behind the sand, providing natural shelter and making it comfortable even in Okinawa's fierce summer sun. The water's exceptional clarity makes snorkeling along the offshore reef outstanding — turtles, tropical fish, and fragments of brain coral are all easily visible. The sea is shallow and calm close to shore, making it safe for all swimmers. Kitesurfing is popular at the northern end where the trade winds pick up in spring and autumn.
Miyako Island is easily reached by direct flights from Tokyo (around 3.5 hours) or Osaka, making Yonaha Maehama accessible for a dedicated beach holiday without the need for inter-island ferries. The beach is located near Maehama near the village of Gusukube, a short drive or bicycle ride from Hirara, Miyako's main town. At sunset, the sky above the Miyako Blue sea transforms into extraordinary shades of orange and pink, and the beach all but empties — creating a magical solitude just as the day's heat relents.
Miyako Island has its own airport (MMY) with direct flights from Tokyo, Osaka, and Naha. From Hirara city, Yonaha Maehama is around 10 km south — easily reached by rental car, scooter, or bicycle (the flat island is very cycle-friendly). No direct bus service to the beach.
April to October for warm swimmable water. May–June (before peak summer) offers excellent conditions with fewer crowds. July–August is busy with domestic tourists. Winter is mild but the sea cools; the beach remains beautiful and mostly empty.
Bring reef shoes — the coral can be sharp at the outer edges. Apply sunscreen before entering the water (reef-safe varieties preferred). Rent a car in Hirara to explore the whole island in a day. The nearby Irabu Bridge (free drive) and Sunayama Beach make excellent day-trip combinations.
