Kondoi Beach is the main swimming and snorkeling beach on Taketomi Island, the most traditional island in the Yaeyama archipelago. The beach is exceptional for its extraordinarily shallow, flat water — in places you can walk 50 metres from shore with the sea barely reaching your knees, the white coral sand floor perfectly visible below your feet. The colour of the water shifts from pale mint at shore to vivid aquamarine deeper out, and the reef edge at the outer boundary is one of the finest snorkeling spots in the Yaeyamas.
Taketomi Island is famous throughout Japan for its star sand — tiny grains shaped like five-pointed stars, which are actually the skeletal remains of microscopic foraminifera (single-celled organisms). Kondoi Beach is one of the best places to collect star sand, though the island asks visitors to take away only small amounts in respect for this natural wonder. Look carefully at handfuls of sand and the tiny perfect stars reveal themselves.
Beyond the beach, Taketomi village is one of Japan's most beautifully preserved Ryukyuan heritage sites — low stone-walled lanes, traditional red-tiled roofed houses draped in bougainvillea, and roads of white star-sand gravel. Buffalo cart rides through the village are a beloved tradition. The island is tiny (a 45-minute walk around the whole perimeter) and entirely car-free, accessible only by a 15-minute ferry from Ishigaki. This combination of pristine beach and extraordinary cultural heritage makes Kondoi the most complete island beach experience in Okinawa.
Fly to Ishigaki Island (ISG) from Naha, Tokyo, or Osaka. Take the Yaeyama Kanko Ferry (15 min, frequent departures) to Taketomi Port. Rent a bicycle at the port and cycle 10 minutes to Kondoi Beach. Buffalo cart tours depart from the village.
May to October for swimming. June is particularly lovely — the rainy season (tsuyu) ends early in Okinawa and crowds are lower before the peak July–August rush. Winter is mild but cool for swimming; the island is still beautiful year-round.
Stay overnight if you can — the island transforms completely after the day-trippers leave. Night sky visibility is exceptional far from city lights. Book accommodation well ahead for peak season. Bring yen — the island has no ATMs. Take star sand home only in tiny amounts.
