About Emerald Beach

Emerald Beach is widely considered the finest beach on Okinawa's main island — a 600-metre crescent of brilliant white-coral sand enclosed in the northern reaches of the Motobu Peninsula, within the grounds of Ocean Expo Park. The park was constructed for the 1975 Okinawa International Ocean Exposition, and Emerald Beach has since been maintained to exceptional standards. The beach is one of only a handful in Japan to consistently receive Blue Flag certification for water quality, safety, and environmental management.

The water here is a vivid emerald-turquoise — true to the beach's name — and offers safe swimming and excellent snorkeling. The reef directly off the beach is home to tropical fish and occasional sea turtles. A shallow sandy lagoon near shore is perfect for younger children, while the outer reef edge provides more interesting snorkeling for confident swimmers. Lifeguards are on duty throughout the swimming season, and snorkel gear, floats, and beach umbrellas are available for hire.

The main draw of combining Emerald Beach with Ocean Expo Park is the proximity to the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium — Japan's largest aquarium and one of the most celebrated in the world, famous for its enormous main tank containing whale sharks and manta rays. The park also includes the Tropical Dream Center (botanical gardens), the Oceanic Culture Museum, and beautiful sunset viewing points overlooking the sea. This makes Emerald Beach the centrepiece of a rich full-day or two-day northern Okinawa itinerary that appeals to every age group.

Visitor Information

Getting There

Rent a car from Naha (recommended — 2 hrs north on Route 58 or expressway). Express buses from Naha Bus Terminal to Ocean Expo Park take around 2.5 hrs. The park has free parking. A beach shuttle runs within the large park complex. Car is best for exploring all of northern Okinawa.

Best Time to Visit

June to October for swimming. July–August is peak season with the best weather and most active beach, though it can be busy. April and May are excellent for fewer crowds with water warming up. The park and aquarium are worth visiting year-round regardless of swimming conditions.

Tips

Arrive early to secure a good beach spot in summer (park opens at 8am). Plan to visit the Churaumi Aquarium either before or after the beach — allow 2–3 hours inside. The park's Tropical Dream Center garden is spectacular. Good restaurants are in the park and in Motobu town nearby.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Emerald Beach free to enter?
Entry to Ocean Expo Park, including Emerald Beach, is free of charge. Parking in the park is also free. The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium within the park charges admission (adults approx. ¥2,180). Snorkel gear, umbrellas, and showers at the beach may charge small fees.
Can you see whale sharks at Emerald Beach?
Whale sharks are kept in the Churaumi Aquarium next door, not in the open sea at the beach. However, the beach and aquarium are the closest you can get to whale sharks in Japan without diving. Wild sea turtles do occasionally visit the reef off Emerald Beach.
How does Emerald Beach compare to the remote Okinawan island beaches?
Emerald Beach is the finest available on Okinawa's main island, with excellent facilities and management, but the remote island beaches (Miyako, Yaeyamas, Kerama Islands) have more pristine water and more dramatic natural settings. Emerald Beach is perfect if staying on the main island or combining with a family-oriented itinerary including the aquarium.
