Aharen Beach is one of Japan's finest family and snorkeling beaches, located on the southern shore of Tokashiki Island in the Kerama Islands National Park — just a 35-minute high-speed ferry ride from Naha. The beach stretches about 800 metres in a sheltered cove, with calm Kerama Blue water that rivals anywhere in the world for colour and clarity. The "Kerama Blue" is unique to this island group — an especially vivid shade of blue-green attributed to the purity of the water and the coral sand seabed.
Snorkeling here is exceptional. The coral reef system around Aharen is part of the Kerama marine protected area and hosts extraordinary biodiversity. Most famously, hawksbill and green sea turtles are regularly encountered while snorkeling — they feed on the seagrass beds and rest on coral outcrops just 30–50 metres from shore. Schools of yellowfin surgeonfish, clownfish sheltering in anemones, and brilliantly coloured parrotfish are everyday sightings. The water visibility is often greater than 30 metres.
The Kerama Islands are also one of the world's premier whale-watching destinations. Humpback whales migrate through the Kerama Strait between January and April each year to breed and calve, and boat tours from Aharen offer close encounters with these magnificent animals. The small village behind the beach has a handful of traditional minshuku guesthouses and seafood restaurants, and the relaxed pace of island life makes overnight stays deeply restorative after the intensity of mainland Japan.
Take the Tokashiki Ferry from Tomari Port in Naha. High-speed ferries take 35 minutes (¥2,530 per person) and run twice daily. Regular ferries take 70 minutes. From Tokashiki village, Aharen is 15 km south — rent a bicycle or take the island bus (timed to ferry arrivals).
May to September for swimming and snorkeling. January to April for whale watching. The beach is lovely year-round and winter (December–February) brings quiet empty conditions with water cool for swimming but still excellent for snorkeling in a wetsuit.
Book guesthouses well ahead for Golden Week (late April–early May) and summer. Many minshuku include dinner — fresh local seafood is excellent. Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the Kerama coral. Do not touch or chase sea turtles — observe from a respectful distance.
