Hikkaduwa has been Sri Lanka's surf capital since the 1970s, when it was discovered by travelling surfers following the trail from Bali and Thailand. The beach offers multiple distinct breaks: a gentle beach break perfect for beginners at the southern end, and the more challenging Hikkaduwa Reef just offshore for experienced surfers. Dozens of surf shops, rental boards, and lesson providers line the beach road. It is also the rare surf town where you can paddle in, ride a wave, and then snorkel a coral reef — all in the same morning.
