About Lanikai Beach

Lanikai Beach is widely regarded as one of the world's most beautiful beaches β€” a 0.8 km strip of powder-white sand tucked between the quiet residential neighbourhood of Lanikai and the Pacific Ocean on the Windward coast of Oahu. The water is a vivid succession of turquoise, lime green and deep blue shades, exceptional even by Hawaiian standards, protected from Pacific swells by the offshore reef and framed by the twin Mokulua Islands β€” the flat black volcanic Na Mokulua β€” sitting about a kilometre offshore. The result is a scene of almost surreal natural perfection.

Because Lanikai sits within a sleepy residential neighbourhood and has no dedicated public parking lot (visitors must use side-street parking and walk through narrow beach access lanes), it never approaches the density of crowds at Waikiki or even Kailua Beach right next door. Arriving before 7am β€” ideally to catch the sunrise behind the Mokulua Islands β€” rewards early risers with the beach almost entirely to themselves. Lanikai is the quintessential sunrise beach on Oahu; the golden light on the twin islands and the turquoise water is among Hawaii's most photographed vistas.

The Mokulua Islands are a sea bird sanctuary managed by the State of Hawaii, accessible by kayak from the beach. Paddling out takes 20–30 minutes and landing is permitted at Moku Nui (the larger island), where a short walk reveals a protected cove on the far side, frequented by Hawaiian green sea turtles. The offshore reef between the beach and the islands offers excellent snorkeling, with a wide range of reef fish visible from the surface.

Visitor Information

Facilities

Lanikai beach itself has no public facilities β€” no lifeguards, no restrooms, no showers. Visitors should bring sunscreen, water, snacks, and a portable shade structure. The nearest restrooms are at the adjacent Kailua Beach Park. Kayak rental shops in Kailua town (a 5-minute drive) offer kayaks and snorkel gear for rent.

Accessibility

Access is via narrow beach access lanes (kamaole) between residential properties. The sandy beach surface is not accessible for mobility aids. Parking is limited to surrounding streets with a 1-hour limit on some roads; early arrival is essential to secure parking without a long walk.

Getting There

Lanikai is 35 km northeast of HNL airport. The easiest access is via Pali Highway or H-3 to Kailua, then Kalaheo Avenue to Lanikai. The Honolulu City Bus (TheBus Route 67A) serves Kailua. Parking on Mokulua Drive fills by 8am on weekends β€” weekdays are significantly easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any facilities at Lanikai Beach?
No β€” Lanikai Beach has no public facilities whatsoever. There are no lifeguards, no restrooms, no showers, no food vendors, and no rental shops on the beach. Pack water, food, sunscreen, and any chairs or umbrellas you need. The nearest restrooms and amenities are at Kailua Beach Park, about 10 minutes on foot.
Is parking difficult at Lanikai?
Parking is the biggest challenge at Lanikai. There is no dedicated public car park β€” visitors use side streets in the Lanikai neighbourhood, which fill up quickly on weekends by 7–8am. Some streets have 1-hour limits. Arriving very early (before 7am) or on weekdays is the easiest solution. Alternatively, park at Kailua Beach Park and walk or cycle to Lanikai.
Can I kayak to the Mokulua Islands?
Yes. The Mokulua Islands (Na Mokulua) are a popular kayaking destination from Lanikai, approximately 1 km offshore β€” a 20–30 minute paddle in calm conditions. Kayak rentals are available in Kailua town. Landing is permitted at Moku Nui (the larger island) but not Moku Iki (smaller island, seabird nesting reserve). Check conditions before paddling as winds and currents can be strong.
