About Hanalei Bay Beach

Hanalei Bay is Kauai's most iconic beach β€” a 3-kilometre crescent of fine gold sand inside a grand, perfectly-formed bay on the island's dramatically scenic north shore. The bay is sheltered by two volcanic headlands and backed by the fluted green ridges of the Na Pali Coast mountains, rising immediately behind the town of Hanalei to razor-edged peaks often draped in cloud and catching the light in ways that shift constantly through the day. The setting has been called one of the most beautiful in all of Hawaii; the 1958 film South Pacific was filmed here, and the sharply pointed peak of Makana, rising above the bay's western headland, became world-famous as the fictional "Bali Hai."

The bay has a strongly defined dual character across the year. In summer (May through early October), it is one of Kauai's finest swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding destinations β€” the bay is calm and protected, the water a striking emerald-blue, and the surrounding landscape of taro fields, mountains, and traditional Hawaiian community creates an atmosphere entirely unlike the resort beaches of the south shore. In winter (November through April), north swells funnel into the bay and the inner beach transforms into a world-class surf venue, with powerful waves ridden by experienced local and visiting surfers. Swimming is dangerous in winter β€” the same energy that creates spectacular wave conditions makes the basin hazardous for non-surfers.

The town of Hanalei itself is one of Hawaii's most charming small communities β€” a single-lane bridge (famously low, limiting vehicle heights and keeping large tour buses out) marks the entry, and the town beyond preserves a genuinely old-Hawaiian character: a 1912 church still in regular use, a small farmers market, the Hanalei Poi shop, and several low-key restaurants and surf shops. The bridge limitation has been significant in preserving Hanalei from the large-scale resort development that has transformed other parts of Kauai. Access to the Na Pali Coast β€” accessible by sea kayak in summer and by helicopter year-round β€” begins here.

Visitor Information

Facilities

Hanalei Beach Park at the east end of the bay has restrooms, showers, and a small parking area. A pier extends from the black sand section near the river mouth. Lifeguards are on duty in summer at Black Pot Beach Park. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available from shops in Hanalei town. Na Pali kayak tour operators depart from the beach in summer.

Accessibility

The flat bay floor and gently-sloping beach make water entry manageable in summer conditions. Public parking at Black Pot Beach Park is limited and fills early. The approach road through Hanalei town includes a one-lane bridge with low clearance (13 feet/3.96 metres), prohibiting motorhomes, large vans, and buses.

Getting There

Lihue Airport (LIH) is 45 km southeast. A car rental is essential on Kauai. Follow Kuhio Highway (Hi-560) northwest from Princeville through Hanalei town, cross the one-lane bridge, and continue to Black Pot Beach Park or Hanalei Beach Park. The drive from Lihue takes approximately 1 hour. Road conditions north of Hanalei can close in severe weather.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to swim at Hanalei Bay in winter?
No β€” swimming at Hanalei Bay in winter (November through April) is dangerous for most visitors. Winter north swells produce powerful wave energy inside the bay that is deceptive from the shore. The water looks calmer than it is, but currents and wave sets can rapidly overpower swimmers. Lifeguards close the beach to swimming when conditions are unsafe. In summer (May–September) the bay is typically calm and ideal for swimming and paddleboarding.
What is "Bali Hai" and where is it?
Bali Hai is the name given to the sharply pointed peak of Makana, the volcanic mountain rising above the western headland of Hanalei Bay, in Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1949 musical South Pacific and the 1958 film. The film was shot on location in Kauai, and the distinctive peak became one of the most recognisable cultural images from the Hawaiian islands. The real mountain is Makana, visible in its full glory from the beach and the Princeville overlooks.
When can I kayak the Na Pali Coast from Hanalei?
Na Pali Coast kayak tours departing from the Ha'ena end of Hanalei Bay operate only in summer (May through September) when north swells are minimal and conditions in the exposed sea caves and valleys of the Na Pali are manageable. The state requires all kayakers to obtain a camping permit if planning to overnight on the coast. Tours typically take 2 days (paddling in one day, camping at Kalalau Beach, returning the next). Day permits for Na Pali kayaking are available from the Hawaii DLNR permit system.
