About Plage du Midi

Plage du Midi is Cannes' best-kept secret — or rather, not a secret at all to the locals who flock here each summer to enjoy a beach that is genuinely, entirely free. While the famous La Croisette gets most of the international attention with its parade of luxury hotels and celebrity associations, Plage du Midi to its west has golden sand of equal quality, the same warm Mediterranean water, and a refreshingly unpretentious atmosphere where Cannois families, students, and year-round residents come to enjoy their seaside city without the theatrical glamour of the festival strip.

The beach extends for approximately one kilometre westward from the old port area, protected by the natural shape of the Cannes bay and backed by a pleasant coastal thoroughfare. The sand is clean and golden, the water entry gradual and family-friendly, and the water itself the warm turquoise of the western Mediterranean. Beach volleyball nets are set up in summer, small snack stands sell ice cream and refreshments, and the general vibe is of relaxed, democratic enjoyment of the French Riviera in its most accessible form.

Plage du Midi offers a useful counterpoint to the sometimes overwhelming glamour of central Cannes. The budget-conscious traveller will find everything they need for an excellent Riviera beach day here without the premium pricing of the Croisette concessions. It is also markedly less crowded than La Croisette during peak summer weeks — the relative obscurity caused by its slightly peripheral position means you can often find a comfortable spot on sand that is impossible at the more famous sections.

Visitor Information

Getting There

From Cannes train station (from Nice: 35 min), walk south-west towards the sea and then turn left (west) along the coastal road past the old port — Plage du Midi begins shortly after. From La Croisette, walk west past the old port approximately 500 metres. Local bus 1 and 20 stop nearby.

Best Time to Visit

Open year-round; best for swimming from June through September. Unlike La Croisette it remains accessible even during the Film Festival period (mid-May) since it doesn't host festival events. Weekday mornings in July–August offer the best combination of good weather and manageable crowds.

Tips

  • Completely free — bring your own towel and picnic
  • Sunset views from here toward the Estérel hills are spectacular
  • Combine with a visit to the old port fish market in the morning

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Plage du Midi really completely free?
Yes — Plage du Midi is a fully public beach with no concession operation and no entry charge. Public showers and toilets are available at no cost. You bring your own towel, parasol, and refreshments, or buy from the modest beach snack stands. This makes it the most accessible Cannes beach experience, beloved by local families and budget travellers who want the same golden sand and warm Mediterranean water as La Croisette without any of the cost.
How does Plage du Midi compare to La Croisette?
Plage du Midi has largely the same quality of sand and water as La Croisette but without the celebrity hotels behind it, the luxury sunbed services, or the prestigious address. The atmosphere is more relaxed and local. If you want people-watching, glamour, and full facilities with a famous backdrop, La Croisette is worth it. If you want a comfortable beach day on the French Riviera at no cost, Plage du Midi delivers everything essential and costs nothing.
What's there to do near Plage du Midi?
The old port area is a short walk east, with excellent seafood restaurants and the morning fish market. The old quarter of Le Suquet (Cannes' medieval village) is visible above the port and offers wonderful views after a 15-minute climb up narrow cobbled streets. La Croisette and all the shops, restaurants, and famous hotel terraces are within walking distance. The Forville market runs mornings Tuesday–Sunday for fresh produce.
