About Plage Beau Rivage

Plage Beau Rivage is one of the most celebrated private beaches on the Côte d'Azur — a beautifully managed stretch of smooth pebbles drawing directly from the crystal-clear Mediterranean, backed by one of the finest sections of the Promenade des Anglais. The beach has attracted artists, writers, and aristocrats since the 19th century: Henri Matisse, who lived nearby and is celebrated at the Musée Matisse above the city, was a regular visitor to this stretch of Nice's seafront.

Unlike sandy beaches where the water can turn murky at the edges, Nice's pebble beaches are renowned for the extraordinary clarity and depth of colour they produce — the smooth stones prevent coastal sand suspension, creating vivid turquoise and azure blues that have made the city's waterfront legendary in European art and travel. Beau Rivage is considered the finest expression of this phenomenon on the Nice seafront, combining the cleanest water zone with a well-managed beach operation offering quality sunbeds, impeccable service, and a respected restaurant.

The setting along the Promenade des Anglais — itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural and architectural significance — elevates any beach visit here. Behind the beach, the palm-lined boulevard stretches as far as the eye can see, flanked by grand Belle Époque hotels and the azure Mediterranean horizon. The Promenade is best experienced by bicycle early morning, before the crowds arrive: hire one from any of the bike stations along the route and ride the full length of the seafront as the city comes alive.

Visitor Information

Getting There

Nice has excellent transport links. Fly into Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE) — the beach is just 6 km away and reachable by tram line 2, taxi, or bus 98/23. From the city centre, walk down any street towards the sea and you'll arrive at the Promenade des Anglais within minutes. Plage Beau Rivage is situated at the central section of the promenade, opposite the Hôtel Negresco.

Best Time to Visit

June and September offer the best combination of warm water, comfortable temperatures (around 25°C), and lighter crowds. July and August are gloriously sunny but extremely busy — book sunbeds in advance if visiting midsummer. The beach is open year-round; even in winter (December–February) the Promenade attracts walkers on sunny days, and the sea remains swimmable for the hardiest souls.

Tips

  • Bring water shoes — the pebbles are hard on bare feet
  • The public section is free; sunbeds require booking
  • Visit early morning for photogenic light and quiet
  • The restaurant serves excellent Niçoise cuisine at lunch

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Plage Beau Rivage a private or public beach?
Plage Beau Rivage is a private beach concessionaire, meaning access to the sunbed area and facilities requires payment. However, by French law all beaches must maintain a free public access strip — so you can enjoy the water and a portion of the beach for free. The managed section offers sunbeds, towels, and full beach service for a daily fee, with advance booking recommended in July and August.
Why are Nice's beaches pebbles instead of sand?
Nice's pebble beaches are formed by the riverine deposits of the Paillon and Var rivers washing down from the Alps. The pebbles are smooth limestone and quartz that have been rounded by millennia of wave action. The benefit is significant: pebble beaches keep the water extraordinarily clear and blue because fine particles don't suspend in the water the way sand does. This is what gives the Nice seafront its world-famous colour intensity. Bring water shoes for comfort.
What is the best time to visit Nice beaches?
The ideal window is late May through June and September. Water temperatures are warm (20–24°C), the sun shines reliably, and the beaches are far less crowded than peak summer. July and August offer the warmest water (25–27°C) but bring dense crowds and premium prices. Nice has a mild winter with many sunny days, making the Promenade des Anglais pleasant for walks year-round even if swimming is reserved for the brave.
