About Pampelonne Beach

Pampelonne is where the French Riviera summer myth was born. In the 1950s, Brigitte Bardot filmed Et Dieu Créa la Femme here, putting St Tropez on the global map and establishing this sweep of pale golden sand as the most glamorous beach address in the world. The legacy is still palpable: Pampelonne is lined with legendary beach clubs — Club 55 (c.1955), Nikki Beach, Tahiti, Moorea — that have attracted film stars, royalty, and the jet set for seven decades, turning an afternoon on the sand into a full social and gastronomic event.

The beach itself deserves its reputation on pure natural merit: 4 kilometres of fine pale sand, shallow warm water that turns extraordinary shades of translucent turquoise in clear conditions, backed by low vineyards and pine-covered headlands that prevent any high-rise development from spoiling the view. The bay faces east and is protected by the Cap Camarat headland, meaning calmer water than the exposed Atlantic coasts. Families with children will find the gentle shallow entry ideal — the water is warm from mid-June through late September.

There is a free public section at the northern end for budget-conscious visitors, though the landmark experience of Pampelonne involves booking a sunbed at one of the major beach clubs — the all-day hospitality, the rosé, the seafood platters, and the extraordinary people-watching make it worth the premium on at least one day. Booking in advance is essential in July and August, when the most coveted clubs fill their reservations weeks ahead.

Visitor Information

Getting There

Fly into Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE) or Toulon-Hyères (TLN). From Nice, drive or take the train to St Raphael (1hr) then bus to St Tropez. From St Tropez town, drive 5km south to Pampelonne (15 min) or take the summer shuttle. A ferry boat connection from Sainte-Maxime is a scenic alternative. Traffic to St Tropez can be severe in summer — arrive early or use the park-and-ride shuttles.

Best Time to Visit

June and early September offer the best conditions — warm water, warm air, manageable crowds. Peak July–August is the quintessential Pampelonne experience but requires planning. The beach clubs are open from late May to early October; outside this period the beach reverts to an almost empty stretch of pristine sand that is beautiful in its own quieter way.

Tips

  • Book Club 55 or similar well in advance for July–Aug
  • Arrive before 10am to find free parking in peak season
  • Free public section at the northern (Tahiti) end
  • Rosé Provence wine from the surrounding Ramatuelle vineyards is excellent

Frequently Asked Questions

Which beach club should I book at Pampelonne?
Club 55 is the legendary choice — it's been here since 1955, has served Brigitte Bardot and the Rolling Stones, and is now run by the grandchildren of the original founder. It retains charm without outlandish pricing. Nikki Beach is the international party option with DJs and dancing. For smaller boutique clubs with calmer atmosphere, look at the southern section of the beach near Cap Camarat. All major clubs require advance reservation for July–August.
Is Pampelonne good for families with young children?
Yes — the shallow, calm, warm water and fine sand make Pampelonne excellent for young children, particularly at the calmer northern end in June or September. The beach clubs offer full food and drink service so parents can relax. July–August in the central party section can be too noisy and crowded for small children; the northern and southern ends remain calmer. The free public section also tends to attract a more family-oriented crowd.
Can you visit Pampelonne without a car?
In summer, yes — Les Bateaux Verts ferry services connect St Tropez port to the beach area, and shuttle buses run from St Tropez town. The Varlib bus service also connects from St Raphael and Toulon railway stations to St Tropez. In peak season, an organised shuttle park system operates with paid parking at the edge of town and buses delivering visitors to the beach. However, outside summer (May, October), access without a car becomes more limited.
