About Milady Beach

Plage de Milady sits at the southern end of Biarritz's beach chain, beyond the dramatic cliffs of Côte des Basques, in a gently curving bay that catches Atlantic swells at an angle which reduces their power slightly compared to the more exposed central beaches. The result is a consistently lively but somewhat more manageable surf environment that has made Milady the preferred destination for families and beginner surfers within the Biarritz area — the beach has a convivial, democratic energy quite different from the more fashion-conscious Grande Plage.

The beach is wide and golden, backed by a beachfront café strip and a good car park, with lifeguard supervision through summer. Multiple surf schools operate from the sand offering lessons in both French and English, and the gentle gradient of the beach makes it excellent for young children even on days without surfing ambitions. The wave quality for learning is among the best in Biarritz on any given day — the consistent but manageable swell produces the kind of gently peeling waves that beginners dream of.

In the evening, Milady transforms into one of Biarritz's favourite sunset-watching spots: the western aspect of the beach means the sun descends behind the Atlantic horizon in an often spectacular display. After a day in the water, the cafés behind the beach serve cold Basque beer, pintxos, and the excellent regional charcuterie and cheeses that make the Basque Country one of France's great culinary destinations. The Piste Cyclable coastal cycle path continues south from here towards Anglet and Bayonne for cyclists seeking longer journeys.

Visitor Information

Getting There

From Biarritz centre, head south along the coastal road past Côte des Basques cliffs — Milady Beach is approximately 2km from Grande Plage, accessible by bus (line 14), cycle, or car. The coastal cycle path is the most scenic option. Parking is available at the beach car park on Boulevard du Prince de Galles.

Best Time to Visit

July and August for warmest conditions and family atmosphere. June and September for better surf and fewer crowds. The beach is supervised by lifeguards from June to September. Autumn brings more powerful Atlantic swells — Milady receives them at a slightly more moderate angle making it accessible to intermediate surfers when other spots are too heavy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Milady better than Grande Plage for families?
For families with young children, many locals prefer Milady. The slightly reduced wave power compared to Grande Plage makes it more accessible for small children and novice swimmers. It is also slightly less crowded than Grande Plage's central position in the city makes it. However both beaches have excellent lifeguard supervision and beach facilities in summer. Grande Plage has the more spectacular architectural backdrop and more buzzing atmosphere; Milady is more relaxed and spacious.
What surf level is Milady Beach suitable for?
Milady suits beginners to lower-intermediate surfers ideally. The break is a typical Basque coast beach break with consistent peaks across the bay. Beginners will find manageable conditions most days in summer; the surf school instructors select the best zones. In autumn (September–November), more powerful swells arrive that create better intermediate conditions. Advanced and expert surfers will prefer Côte des Basques for its more classic wave shape or the exposed beach breaks further north towards Anglet.
How cold is the Atlantic water at Biarritz?
The Bay of Biscay at Biarritz is cooler than the Mediterranean — expect 17–19°C in June, 19–22°C at peak summer (July–August), and 18–20°C in September. For casual swimming in sun-warmed summer conditions this is perfectly comfortable, though noticeably cooler than Riviera beaches. Surfers wear 3mm wetsuits in summer and 4–5mm suits in autumn and winter. If you find cold water refreshing, the Atlantic here is invigorating; if you prefer warm baths, time your visit to late July–August.
