Sosua Beach occupies a beautiful sheltered cove just below the cliff-perched town of Sosua, and is justifiably famous as the best snorkeling beach on the Dominican Republic's north coast. A coral reef system runs parallel to the beach at very accessible depths, creating an outstanding underwater experience that begins just metres from the shore. The combination of the protected bay, white sand, and remarkably clear water makes it one of the most enjoyable family beaches in the Puerto Plata region.
The snorkeling here is genuinely excellent by Caribbean standards. The reef is home to an impressive variety of tropical fish including parrotfish, sergeant majors, angelfish, blue tang, and the occasional moray eel. Stingrays are frequently spotted gliding over the sandy patches between coral heads, and sea turtles make occasional appearances. Several dive operators in Sosua town offer scuba courses and reef dive trips for those who want to go deeper, and snorkel gear can be rented inexpensively directly on the beach.
The town of Sosua itself adds considerable interest to a beach visit. It has a fascinating history as a Jewish refugee settlement established in the 1940s, and the small Jewish museum in town tells this extraordinary story. The town has evolved into one of the north coast's most vibrant communities with a lively selection of bars, restaurants, and nightlife at the top of the beach access road — making Sosua an excellent base for exploration of the wider Puerto Plata region.
Sosua is approximately 25 km east of Gregorio Luperón International Airport and 20 minutes by road. Taxis and guagua buses run regularly along the coastal highway. Most hotels in the Playa Dorada complex offer Sosua day trips. The beach is accessible via the main road through Sosua town — look for the pedestrian access path down to the cove.
December to April is the dry season and ideal for snorkeling visibility. Mornings offer the calmest water and best underwater conditions before afternoon trade winds arrive. Sosua is popular with Dominican visitors on weekends and holidays — arrive early for the most peaceful experience. Water temperature is pleasant year-round.
Snorkel gear rental on the beach is affordable and worthwhile — the reef is right there. Book early for scuba trips through Sosua town operators. The restaurants at the top of the beach access path are excellent for seafood lunch. Store valuables securely — the beach can be busy and petty theft occasionally occurs.
