Rehoboth Beach holds the unofficial title of "Nation's Summer Capital" β a nod to its proximity to Washington D.C. (just 2.5 hours) and its long history as the beach retreat of politicians, diplomats, and government workers escaping the Beltway heat. But Rehoboth is far more than a political escape valve: it is one of the finest traditional boardwalk beach towns on the entire East Coast, with a remarkably well-preserved 1-mile boardwalk, a genuinely excellent restaurant scene (including Dogfish Head Brewing's brewpub), and a welcoming, cosmopolitan atmosphere that has made it particularly beloved among LGBTQ+ travelers.
The beach itself β about a mile of clean Atlantic sand fronted by the boardwalk and separated from the town's commercial district by a narrow strip of dune grass β is wide, well-maintained, and staffed by lifeguards throughout summer. The wave conditions are moderate (typically 1β3 feet) and the water temperature reaches a comfortable 72β74Β°F in July and early August β warmer than any New England beach. Funland Amusement Park at the north end of the boardwalk is a beloved family institution, with classic rides and games operating continuously since 1962.
Rehoboth's restaurant and nightlife scene is exceptional for a small Atlantic beach town. Rehoboth Avenue, running from the boardwalk toward the highway, is lined with acclaimed restaurants, bars, boutique shops, and the famous Dogfish Head Brewings and Eats β the original location of the Delaware craft brewery that helped define American artisanal beer. The town's progressive culture, walkable downtown grid, and tax-free Delaware shopping combine to make Rehoboth a complete beach destination rather than just a day-trip option.
Rehoboth has paid parking garages and street meters throughout the downtown grid (arrive before 9 AM on peak summer weekends). Public restrooms and outdoor showers are available at boardwalk access points. Lifeguards on duty at designated beach sections June through Labor Day. The boardwalk has benches, food stands, and Funland amusement park. No sales tax in Delaware β popular for shopping on Rehoboth Avenue.
Rehoboth Beach is generally safe for swimming with lifeguard coverage in summer. Rip currents can form β swim between the flags. Alcohol is not permitted on the beach. Beach tags (badge fees) are required June through Labor Day β purchase daily or seasonal tags at the boardwalk access points or online. After Labor Day the beach is free and uncrowded. Hurricane storm surge is a risk during late summer Atlantic storms; monitor weather forecasts.
Rehoboth Beach is 2.5 hours from Washington D.C. via US-50 East across the Bay Bridge and DE-1. From Philadelphia, take US-13 south through Delaware then US-9/DE-1, approximately 2 hours. Nearest airports are Philadelphia (PHL) and the D.C. area airports (DCA, IAD, BWI). A seasonal DART First State bus express service runs from Wilmington, DE. Most visitors drive; the Delaware beaches are not served by train or significant public transit.
