Žnjan Beach extends along Split's eastern coastline in a residential suburb — making it the beach of choice for Split locals rather than tourists from the cruise ships and ferries that crowd the Old Town. At roughly 1 kilometre long, it offers far more space than the central beaches, and the abundance of room means families can spread out comfortably even on warm summer evenings when Split residents head en masse to the sea after work.
The beach is pebble-and-concrete in character, typical of the Dalmatian coast, but has been well-developed with a network of showers, toilets, lifeguard towers, playgrounds for children, fitness equipment along the promenade, and multiple beach bars and kiosks operating throughout summer. A long promenade runs alongside the beach making it accessible for walkers and cyclists. The pebble beach is coarser near the shore with finer material deeper down.
The lack of prominent tourist branding and the residential surroundings give Žnjan an authentic character — local families, pensioners in morning swimming routines, children on bikes, and teenagers playing volleyball in the late afternoon create the natural rhythms of Dalmatian daily life. Visitors looking for a genuine, un-touristy beach experience in Split will find it here, especially at weekday mornings or evenings.
Bus lines 15 and 17 run from Split centre to the Žnjan area. Free large parking lot adjacent to the beach. Split Airport (SPU) is about 22 km away. Taxi or rideshare from the Old Town takes 10–12 minutes.
Evenings after 5pm in summer when locals arrive — a great time to experience authentic Split beach culture. Mornings are quiet and peaceful. The beach is pleasant from May to October.
This is a pebble beach — bring water shoes or flip-flops for comfortable entry. The western section nearest the Bačvice direction tends to be slightly quieter. Excellent spot to meet locals and avoid tourist crowds.
