Stiniva Beach is among the most spectacular natural formations in the entire Mediterranean — a small pebble cove enclosed almost entirely by towering limestone cliffs that rise 150 metres on either side, accessible only through a narrow 2-metre gap in the rocks where the sea has broken through the cliff face over millennia. The gap is so narrow that boats must time entry carefully and swimmers squeeze sideways through the opening on foot. Once inside the enclosed bay, the experience is utterly unique: an amphitheatre of vertical stone, utterly still turquoise water, and a small white pebble beach catching sunlight that penetrates the opening only at certain hours.
Stiniva was voted the best beach in Europe by the European best destinations competition in 2016, bringing worldwide attention to both the beach and the island of Vis — which had remained underdeveloped for decades after serving as a Yugoslav military base closed to foreign visitors until 1989. The UNESCO quality of water here is exceptional; the enclosed cove's depth ranges from shallow swimming zones near the pebble beach to deeper areas suitable for snorkeling directly off the rock walls, where sea caves and overhangs harbour a rich variety of Adriatic marine life.
Access requires either a demanding 30-minute hike down a steep rocky path from the clifftop parking area, or a boat from Komiža or Vis Town — the boat option being significantly more comfortable especially in the heat of summer. A small seasonal bar operates at the beach, and sun loungers are available for rent. Swimming through the cliff gap into the open sea on the outside reveals extraordinary underwater caves and tunnels for those confident enough to explore beyond the enclosed bay.
Vis island is reached by ferry from Split (SPU, 2.5 hours). From Vis Town or Komiža take a boat excursion or drive to the clifftop trailhead (approximately 25 km from Vis Town). The hike to the beach takes 30 minutes and is steep and rocky. Boat trips from Komiža are recommended.
June–September. The beach is now very popular in peak season — early morning boat arrivals before 9am provide the most private experience. September is ideal: warm water (25°C+) and significantly fewer visitors than July–August. The enclosed cove can be very hot at midday in summer.
Take the boat — the return hike uphill in summer heat is exhausting. Arrive early to secure a spot on the small beach. Bring snorkeling gear for the rock walls and cliff gap area. The cove fills with boats by midday in peak season — early morning or late afternoon visits are best.
