Banje Beach is the crown jewel of Dubrovnik's coastline — a beautiful pebble shore framed by the UNESCO World Heritage Old City walls that rise dramatically from the Adriatic just metres away. The setting is so extraordinary that it has become one of the most photographed beach views in all of Europe. The crystal-clear turquoise water glimmers against the ancient stone, creating a visual spectacle unlike any other beach destination.
Located just east of the Ploče Gate, Banje is easily accessible on foot from the old town — a five-minute walk around the city walls brings you to the beach entrance. The eastern end is operated as a private beach club with sun lounger rentals and a sleek beach bar serving cocktails; the western section near the rocks is free to access. Both sides offer the same incomparable view of the Lovrijenac Fortress and the city walls stretching into the sea.
The beach itself shelves gently into the sea, making it suitable for swimmers of most abilities. The pebble bottom transitions to rocky outcrops further out, where the water becomes deeper and clearer still. A water taxi service operates from the city harbour to the beach, providing an enjoyable short boat ride as an alternative to the walk. In peak season, the beach bar hosts DJ events in the evening with the Old Town walls illuminated as a backdrop.
Walk 5 minutes from Old Town through Ploče Gate. Water taxi from the Old Harbour operates in summer. Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) is 22 km away; local buses stop near the beach.
June and September offer warm water with smaller crowds than July–August. The beach is open from April to October. Water temperatures peak around 26–27°C in August.
Arrive early morning (before 9am) to secure a good spot in summer. Water shoes are helpful for the pebble entry. The beach faces east so morning light is best for photography of the city walls.
