Best Beaches in Costa de la Luz

Your guide to Spain's Coast of Light — wild Atlantic beaches backed by dunes, Roman ruins, and some of Europe's best surf and kite conditions.

Exploring the Costa de la Luz

The Costa de la Luz — the Coast of Light — is Atlantic Andalusia at its wildest and most elemental. Stretching from the Guadiana estuary on the Portuguese border to Tarifa at the tip of Europe, this is a coast of broad pale-sand beaches swept by Atlantic trade winds, backed by dunes and pine forests, with the Atlas Mountains of Morocco visible on the clearest days. Unlike the Mediterranean Costa del Sol to the east, the Costa de la Luz has no mass resort development along most of its length — the Doñana National Park protects a vast wild stretch, and even the popular areas around Tarifa and Zahara de los Atunes retain a raw, unspoilt quality. Bolonia is perhaps the most dramatic example: a pristine beach below a 30-metre sand dune, beside the ruins of the Roman city of Baelo Claudia, with Africa visible across the strait.
