Windsurfing, SUP, and water sports on the Catalan Mediterranean coast
The Costa Brava is not known for big surf — the Mediterranean's enclosed basin limits wave height. However, the Tramontane and Llevant winds create excellent conditions for windsurfing and stand-up paddleboarding, particularly on the wider, more exposed beaches. These two beaches offer the best conditions for wind-powered water sports in the region.

The wide, open expanse of Platja de Aro catches both the Tramontane and sea breeze, making it the top choice for windsurfers and kitesurfers in the area. Several water sports schools operate on the beach during summer.

The open bay of Tossa de Mar offers stand-up paddleboarding with one of the most dramatic backdrops on the Mediterranean coast — gliding past 12th-century towers with the sea to yourself is a genuinely spectacular experience.
