Totoralillo is one of those rare coastal gems that has somehow escaped mass tourism despite being just a short drive from La Serena. Tucked into a small bay south of the city, this crescent-shaped cove is sheltered by dramatic rocky headlands that calm the open Pacific swells and create extraordinarily clear water. The visibility here can reach 10 metres or more on calm days, revealing a submarine world of colourful kelp forests, rocky reef systems, and an abundance of marine life that makes it one of the best snorkeling spots on Chile's central-north coast.
The beach itself is compact and intimate, a curve of pale sand that never feels crowded even during the high season. Rocky outcrops at either end of the cove create natural tide pools teeming with sea urchins, starfish, small crabs, and anemones — a source of endless fascination for children and marine enthusiasts. Snorkelers regularly spot schools of colourful fish, octopuses hiding in the reef crevices, and occasionally marine otters playing in the kelp. The rocky areas also attract skilled local fishermen who cast lines from the headlands for reineta and corvina.
The atmosphere at Totoralillo is wonderfully relaxed and low-key. There are no high-rise apartments or blaring music — just the sound of waves, seabirds, and quiet conversation. A handful of small kiosks open during summer to sell drinks and simple meals, but most visitors bring their own picnic supplies. The surrounding hills are covered in drought-resistant vegetation that blooms spectacularly after rare rains, adding colour to the already-beautiful landscape. For travellers visiting La Serena who want to escape the main tourist strip and discover something genuinely special, Totoralillo is the answer.
Totoralillo is a public beach with free access. The access road is paved but narrow, and the path down to the beach involves an uneven sandy trail. Wheelchair access is very limited. There are no lifeguards, so swim within your comfort level. The cove is generally calm, but always check conditions before snorkeling around the rocks. Bring everything you need as facilities are minimal.
Totoralillo is located about 15 km south of La Serena, accessed by a turn-off from the coastal road (Ruta 5). The drive takes about 20 minutes from the city centre. A car is highly recommended as there is no regular public transport to the beach. Some tour operators in La Serena include Totoralillo in coastal excursion packages.
