Best Beaches in Cantabria

Your guide to Cantabria's finest beaches — wild Atlantic surf with the snow-capped Picos de Europa on the horizon, and clifftop beaches of extraordinary solitude.

Exploring Cantabria's Coastline

Cantabria is one of Spain's smallest but most dramatically beautiful communities. Its coastline is 285km of Cantabrian Sea — a region of Atlantic waves, golden sandy beaches backed by green meadows, and headland-to-headland views that take in the snow-capped Picos de Europa mountains hanging above the sea to the south. The contrast between the Atlantic coast and the mountain interior is uniquely Cantabrian — nowhere else in Spain can you surf in the morning and be hiking in the high Picos by afternoon. Cantabria's beaches tend toward the wide, sandy, and exposed — excellent surf beaches on its western reaches, calmer and more sheltered coves around Santander. Unlike the Costa del Sol or Costa Brava, Cantabria's coast is not overdeveloped: nature parks protect significant stretches, and beaches like Oyambre retain their wild, wind-swept character without resort infrastructure.
