Chesterman Beach is widely regarded as the most beautiful beach in Tofino, and many would argue in all of British Columbia. This stunning 2.5-kilometre stretch of sand sits between Frank Island and the rocky headlands south of Tofino, split into north and south sections by a small rocky peninsula. At low tide, you can walk across to Frank Island, a privately owned islet with a dramatic viewpoint that reveals the full sweep of the beach and the open Pacific beyond.
The beach is a paradise for surfers of all abilities. The south end receives more consistent waves and is popular with experienced surfers, while the north end offers gentler breaks ideal for beginners taking lessons from one of Tofino's renowned surf schools. Beyond surfing, the beach rewards explorers with rich tide pools teeming with sea stars, urchins, and anemones among the rocky outcrops. Eagles wheel overhead, and during migration season, grey whales can be spotted from shore as they travel along the coast.
Unlike the busier Long Beach in the national park, Chesterman retains a sense of peaceful seclusion. Luxury resorts like the Wickaninnish Inn perch at the south end, yet the beach itself feels wild and untouched. The sand is firm and ideal for running or long reflective walks, and sunsets here are nothing short of breathtaking, painting the sky over distant sea stacks in vivid oranges and purples. Chesterman Beach captures everything that makes Tofino one of the world's great coastal destinations.

Yes, but only at low tide. A sandbar connecting the beach to Frank Island is exposed during low tide, allowing you to walk across. Always check tide tables before crossing and give yourself plenty of time to return โ the water rises quickly and can strand visitors on the island.
Parking is limited to small roadside lots and can fill up quickly during summer weekends. Arrive before 10 AM for the best chance of a spot. You can also walk from Tofino (about 30 minutes) or use the seasonal shuttle service. Some visitors cycle along the Pacific Rim Highway bike path.
Absolutely. Water temperatures range from 9โ15ยฐC year-round, so a full wetsuit (4/3mm minimum) is essential. In winter, many surfers add booties, gloves, and a hood. Every surf shop in Tofino rents quality wetsuits and boards if you don't have your own gear.
