About Hermosa Beach

Hermosa Beach — 'beautiful' in Spanish — is perhaps the most quintessentially Southern California of all the South Bay beach communities: a small, walkable, sun-soaked town of just one square mile where life revolves around the beach, volleyball, and the energetic Pier Avenue restaurant and bar strip. Unlike the more sprawling Santa Monica or the upscale Manhattan Beach, Hermosa has a genuine village character — most residents walk or cycle to the beach, and the community has resisted the commercialisation that has overtaken many of its neighbours.

The beach itself runs about 1.5 miles between Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach, accessible along the continuous South Bay Bicycle Trail — a paved path that connects all three communities into an effortless 3-mile beach walk or cycle. The Hermosa Strand, the beachfront promenade, is lined with volleyball courts and is the community's communal living room on summer evenings. The volleyball scene is taken seriously — Hermosa hosts major AVP professional events and has produced numerous elite players, and pickup games are easy to find at almost any time of year.

What makes Hermosa particularly beloved is the combination of the beach with the Pier Avenue strip one block back from the sand. This short pedestrian street is packed with independent restaurants, bars, and sidewalk terraces that create a genuine social hub — particularly on summer evenings when the entire street is alive with activity. The pier itself is modest but provides a pleasant walk above the waves and a favourite spot for local fishing. Hermosa's small size means everything is walkable, and the community's pride in maintaining that intimate character is very evident.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hermosa Beach known for?
Hermosa Beach is known for its laid-back beach culture, strong volleyball scene (hosting major AVP events), and the lively Pier Avenue pedestrian strip of restaurants and bars. It has a genuine small-town community character that sets it apart from the more commercial beaches to the north and south.
Is Hermosa Beach good for surfers?
Yes — Hermosa Beach has a consistent beach break with good conditions especially from May–November. The pier area provides a sandbar for more concentrated waves. The vibe is relaxed and accessible to intermediate surfers without the competitive intensity of Huntington Beach.
How does Hermosa Beach compare to Manhattan and Redondo Beach?
Hermosa is sandwiched between the two and has a more village-like, relaxed atmosphere. Manhattan Beach (1 km north) is more upscale; Redondo Beach (1 km south) is more commercial. Hermosa is considered the most community-oriented and social of the three, especially for the bar and restaurant scene on Pier Avenue.
