Dockweiler State Beach is Los Angeles's most unusual and endearingly eccentric beach — a wide, 3-mile stretch of golden sand in Playa del Rey that has positioned itself directly under the final approach path of LAX airport, meaning aircraft thunder overhead at intervals of a few minutes during busy periods. Rather than being a liability, this peculiarity has become part of Dockweiler's charm, attracting aviation enthusiasts who come deliberately to watch jets arriving from around the globe as the sun sets over the Pacific — an experience that is entirely its own and found nowhere else in the world.
Beyond the aviation theatre, Dockweiler's most valuable feature in the context of modern LA beach restrictions is its 200+ fire rings still available for public use. While most other LA area beaches have eliminated beach fires in recent years, Dockweiler remains the primary destination for the classic Southern California bonfire tradition — on weekend evenings from May through October, the rings are occupied from late afternoon and the beach glows with dozens of fires as the sun goes down and the jets fly overhead. The atmosphere is genuinely celebratory and communal in a way that is increasingly rare at city beaches.
Dockweiler also has the rare distinction of offering the only beach camping in the City of Los Angeles, with an RV park directly on the sand that also accommodates tent campers. The beach itself is broad and well-maintained, with reliable surf from a consistent beach break, professional LA County lifeguards in season, volleyball courts, and full restroom and shower facilities. The Marvin Braude Bike Trail — the famous 22-mile LA beach bike path — runs through the beach, connecting it easily to Venice and Santa Monica to the north and Redondo and Torrance to the south.
Dockweiler has accessible restrooms, paved parking, and beach access mats. The flat sand and paved promenade make much of the beach accessible. The fire ring area involves some sand walking. Beach wheelchairs are available through LA County lifeguard services.
Take Lincoln Boulevard south to Culver Boulevard in Playa del Rey, then head west to the beach. There is also direct access from the I-405 via Lincoln Blvd. The Metro C Line (Green) connects to nearby Redondo Beach, with bus connections. LAX is 3 km north — the beach is visible from the departure terminals.
