About Coronado Beach

Coronado Beach is one of the finest and most celebrated beaches in all of California — a wide, sweeping crescent of shimmering golden sand that has been voted the best beach in America multiple times by the prestigious Dr. Beach ranking. Located on the Coronado peninsula across San Diego Bay from downtown, the beach is backed by the magnificent Victorian bulk of the Hotel del Coronado — one of America's most historic resort hotels, operating since 1888 — and faces the open Pacific with absolutely commanding views.

What makes Coronado Beach physically distinctive is its sand. The beach's characteristic golden shimmer is caused by a high concentration of mica and ilmenite mineral particles mixed into the standard quartz sand, creating an almost glittery effect in direct sunlight that is unlike any other beach in Southern California. Combined with the extraordinary backdrop of the Hotel Del, the palm trees, and the San Diego skyline visible across the bay, the visual experience of standing on Coronado Beach is genuinely exceptional.

The beach is wide — nearly 100 yards from water to dune at low tide — and the surf is manageable for swimmers, with clean open Pacific swell and a sandy bottom throughout. The area attracts a broad mix of visitors from military families (Naval Air Station North Island occupies most of the island) to weddings on the Hotel Del's beach to tourists crossing from San Diego for a day. Orange Avenue, Coronado's charming main street, is a 10-minute walk from the beach and offers excellent dining, boutique shopping, and the charms of a well-preserved small American city that feels miles from the intensity of San Diego proper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Coronado Beach sand so sparkly?
Coronado Beach's distinctive shimmering golden sand is caused by a high concentration of mica, ilmenite, and other mineral particles mixed with the standard quartz sand. The effect is particularly visible in direct sunlight, giving the beach an almost glittery appearance that sets it apart. It has been voted 'Best Beach in America' multiple times by Dr. Beach.
Is Coronado Beach safe to swim?
Yes — Coronado Beach is consistently rated one of the safest swimming beaches on the West Coast. The beach faces southwest and receives clean, open Pacific swell with no major rocks or obstructions. Lifeguards patrol daily in summer. The water is clear and generally calm.
How do you get to Coronado from downtown San Diego?
The San Diego Ferry connects Broadway Pier in downtown to the Ferry Landing in Coronado roughly every 30 minutes (15-minute crossing). The iconic Coronado Bridge is also an option by car or bike. A round trip Ferry ticket is about –12 and the bike rental from the Ferry Landing makes for a superb ride along the bay to the beach.
