Porto da Barra is Salvador's most beloved urban beach and one of the finest in all of northeast Brazil — a crescent of brilliant white sand sheltered inside a calm bay that creates Caribbean-clear snorkeling conditions. The protected bay location means waves barely reach the shoreline, producing the calm, warm, transparent water that makes Porto da Barra extraordinary. Immediately below the surface, coral formations and tropical fish create a natural aquarium that visitors explore with simple mask and snorkel.
The Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra lighthouse guards the entrance to the bay and creates one of Salvador's most photographed sunsets. The beach sits in the stylish Barra neighbourhood, which is Salvador's most pleasant area for shopping, eating, and exploring — with the Oceanic Museum inside the fort and Salvador Carnival's famous circuit passing nearby on the Orla Barra. The proximity to the historic Pelourinho district — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — makes Porto da Barra the perfect base for combining cultural and coastal tourism.
Flat beach access from the promenade. The Barra neighbourhood is well served by bus from all parts of Salvador. Flat promenade suitable for mobility aids.
Bus routes from Salvador city centre reach Barra in 20-30 minutes. Uber and taxis widely available. From Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães Airport (SSA) approximately 40 minutes by taxi. Parking in Barra neighbourhood is limited at peak times.
