About Itacarezinho Beach

Itacarezinho Beach is one of Bahia's most unspoiled wild coast gems — a vast, deserted arc of golden sand backed entirely by Atlantic rainforest, accessible only via a 40-minute hike through the Mata Atlântica. The trail begins at a small car park off the road and passes through dense, humid rainforest rich with birds, butterflies, and the sounds of the jungle before emerging onto a beach of extraordinary scale and beauty. The effort required to reach it has preserved its completely undeveloped character.

The beach has hosted professional surf competitions including Brasil stages of the WSL circuit, and the wave quality is exceptional — a powerful beach break with long, consistent rides that form when significant swells push in from the South Atlantic. Between competitions, the beach is practically deserted, creating the rare and extraordinary experience of surfing a competition-quality wave alone. The surrounding Mata Atlântica is one of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems and the hike offers excellent birdwatching opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the hike to the beach?
The 40-minute trail is moderate — not technically difficult but requires reasonable fitness. The path has roots and can be muddy after rain. Wear closed-toe shoes with grip and bring insect repellent. The return hike is the same, so plan for 90 minutes total of walking.
Is Itacarezinho open to the public?
Yes — the beach is on public land and the trail is open to all. There are no entrance fees or permits required. The only restriction is leaving the area clean (take all litter out) and respecting the natural environment.
What surfing level is required?
Intermediate to advanced surfers will get the most from Itacarezinho's powerful beach break. During swell season waves reach 1.5-2.5m. There are no lifeguards and no rescue capability — only confident ocean swimmers should enter the water.
