About Ipanema Beach

Ipanema Beach is Rio's most fashionable beach, immortalised by the bossa nova classic "The Girl from Ipanema" composed by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes in 1962. Stretching between the Arpoador headland and the canal that leads into Leblon, Ipanema is a social hub organised into unofficial postos where different communities gather — surfers towards Arpoador, families in the middle, and the vibrant LGBTQ+ community around Posto 9 (known as "Farme").

The backdrop is unforgettable: the twin rock peaks of Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers) frame the western end of the beach, and the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas shimmers just behind the city blocks to the north. Sunsets at Ipanema are celebrated as some of Brazil's most beautiful, with crowds gathering at Arpoador rock to applaud as the sun dips behind the mountains.

The neighbourhood itself is one of Rio's most upscale and liveable, with excellent restaurants on Rua Garcia d'Ávila, boutique shops on Visconde de Pirajá, and the Feira Hippie craft market every Sunday at Praça General Osório. A morning at Ipanema followed by lunch in the neighbourhood is the quintessential Rio de Janeiro experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Ipanema different from Copacabana?
Ipanema has a more local, residential feel and is considered slightly more upscale. The promenade is narrower and less commercial. The backdrop of Dois Irmãos peaks makes it arguably more photogenic. Copacabana is longer, more touristy, and has more beach infrastructure.
When is the famous Arpoador sunset?
Arpoador sunsets are most spectacular between June and September when the sun sets directly behind the Dois Irmãos peaks. Crowd applause at sunset is a local tradition year-round. Arrive 30 minutes early for a good spot on the rock.
What is Posto 9?
Posto 9 — officially Lifeguard Post 9 near Rua Farme de Amoedo — is Ipanema's LGBTQ+-friendly section, one of the most welcoming and colourful stretches of beach in all of South America. The area is also known as "Farme" beach.
