Farol da Barra Beach wraps around the famous lighthouse promontory at the tip of the Barra neighbourhood, offering some of Salvador's most dramatic ocean views. The beach faces the open Atlantic on its outer side and the calm bay of Porto da Barra on the inner side, occupying both faces of the same rocky headland. The Farol da Barra Lighthouse — the oldest of the Americas still in active operation, first lit in 1698 — provides one of Bahia's most iconic sunset backdrops.
The beach itself has more energetic character than the sheltered Porto da Barra side — the open Atlantic delivers real waves that attract local surfers and bodyboarders, particularly around the lighthouse base. The promenade above the beach is lined with bars and restaurants that fill up spectacularly at sunset as visitors gather to watch the sun set behind the historic structure. The Museu Náutico da Bahia inside the fort displays navigational history and offers a panoramic view from the lighthouse tower.
Promenade is accessible along the beachfront. The lighthouse fort involves stairs. Good bus connections from all parts of Salvador to the Barra terminus.
Bus from Salvador city centre to Barra terminus (20-30 minutes). Uber and taxis widely available. Airport (SSA) approximately 40 minutes. The lighthouse itself is a 5-minute walk from Porto da Barra beach.
