About Radio Beach

Radio Beach is Bimini's most accessible and beloved strip of sand — an easy walk north from Alice Town, the island's small main settlement, and the beach where most of Bimini's social beach life unfolds. Named for a historic radio station that once broadcast from this stretch of North Bimini, the beach has evolved into the island's family and snorkelling hub, drawing weekenders from Miami who cross the Gulf Stream in fast ferries or small aircraft to spend a day in the Bahamas just 80 kilometres from Florida.

The water here is textbook Bahamas: aquamarine, warm, and breathtakingly clear. The shallow protected side of North Bimini offers calm swimming conditions for children, and the snorkelling is excellent along the rocky reef sections to the north — parrotfish, snappers, angelfish, and occasional nurse sharks resting on the sandy bottom. The Bimini Road (an unusual underwater rock formation some believe is evidence of Atlantis) is a short boat ride away, adding a mystique to the island that draws divers from around the world.

In the afternoon, Radio Beach fills with the relaxed island energy that makes Bimini such a special destination: local and visiting boaters anchor just offshore, the beach bars come alive, and the entire island seems to gather on this strip of sand to watch the sun sink towards the Florida mainland. It's a perfectly Bahamian evening experience.

Best Time to Visit

October to June. Summer brings intense heat (May–September) and more activity from Floridian boaters. Winter is excellent for visibility (often 30m+) and cooler comfortable temperatures. Weekends are busiest — arrive midweek for more space.

Tips

Book the ferry or flight well in advance for weekends. The Bimini Big Game Club and Resorts World Bimini are nearby for accommodation. Ask locally about guided snorkel trips to the Bimini Road. The Gulf Stream temperature adds extra warmth — even in winter the water is pleasant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I swim with dolphins at Bimini?
Yes — wild Atlantic spotted dolphins are resident around Bimini and regularly interact with snorkellers and swimmers. Several local operators run guided dolphin snorkel tours from Alice Town. Swimming with wild dolphins in the Bahamas is a sought-after experience.
What is the Bimini Road?
The Bimini Road (or Bimini Wall) is an underwater rock formation of large, flat limestone blocks about 100m long, located in shallow water near North Bimini. Some researchers speculate it could be a manmade road from a lost civilisation; geologists believe it's a natural formation called beach rock. Whatever the explanation, it's a fascinating dive and snorkel site.
How close is Bimini to Miami?
Bimini is only 80 km (50 miles) east of Miami — the closest Bahamian island to the Florida mainland. The ferry takes 2 hours and sails daily. Private boats cross in under an hour. This proximity makes it an extremely popular weekend day trip.
