About Guana Cay Beach

Great Guana Cay is a long, wild sliver of land facing open Atlantic north of Great Abaco, and its western Atlantic beach is everything the Out Island Bahamas stands for: ungroomed white sand, consistent wave action, and a horizon that stretches to the open ocean without interruption. The beach runs for several kilometres without commercial development — it's exactly the kind of undiscovered paradise that Abaco old-timers guard jealously.

What makes Guana Cay Beach legendary, however, is Nippers Beach Bar and Grill — a hillside institution perched on a dune above the beach with panoramic views across the Atlantic to the distant cays. Nippers is famous throughout the Bahamas for its eponymous rum cocktail (the "Nipper"), its Sunday pig roast drawing boaters from across the northern Abacos, and its pure, celebratory beach bar spirit. The view from the terrace — white sand, turquoise then deep blue stretching to infinity — is one of the Bahamas' great vistas.

The surf is the attraction for those who bring boards: consistent beach-break waves arrive from Atlantic groundswells, particularly in winter. At 3–6 feet, the waves are fun and hollow, breaking on a sandy bottom. No surf hire exists on the island, so visitors must bring their own equipment from Marsh Harbour or Nassau.

Visitor Information

Getting There

Fly to Marsh Harbour (MHH). Take the Guana Cay ferry from Crossing Beach dock — crossing takes 15–20 minutes. Golf carts are available for hire on the island. The Atlantic beach is a 5-minute golf cart or walk from the ferry dock.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round, but November to May for best conditions. Winter months bring the most reliable surf (December–March). The pig roast at Nippers runs on Sundays during peak season — a week-defining social event in the Abacos.

Tips

Check the ferry schedule on the Abaco website before you go. Nippers serves food and drinks — no need to bring your own. The golf cart hire includes beach access. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a towel. Book ferry in advance on busy Sunday pig roast days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the "Nipper" cocktail?
The Nipper is Nippers Bar's signature rum punch — a secret-recipe rum cocktail with tropical fruit juices that has made the bar famous throughout the Bahamas. It's strong, sweet, and dangerously delicious. Don't skip it.
Can you stay overnight on Guana Cay?
Yes — Orchid Bay Marina has cottages, and there are a handful of private vacation rentals. The island has a permanent community of about 150 people. Staying overnight lets you experience the beach at sunrise and sunset — magical.
How is the snorkelling at Guana Cay?
The harbour side of the island has calmer water and good snorkelling along the rocky shoreline. The Atlantic beach side has choppier conditions but interesting reef structure at the north end of the beach, with good fish diversity.
