About Whitehaven Beach

Whitehaven Beach is Australia's most celebrated beach and one of the most photographed in the world. Stretching for 7 kilometres along Whitsunday Island in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, it is defined by its extraordinary pure white silica sand β€” 98% pure quartz β€” so fine and cool that it doesn't absorb heat even under tropical sun. The sand is cool to walk on in bare feet at midday, unlike most beaches. Combined with the striking blue-green swirling waters visible in every aerial photograph, Whitehaven is genuinely otherworldly.

The beach is entirely undeveloped (aside from basic toilet facilities and a boardwalk to Hill Inlet viewpoint) β€” there are no cafΓ©s, no hotels, no surf shops. This deliberate preservation, achieved through Queensland and Australian national park protections, ensures the beach remains almost exactly as it was thousands of years before European settlement. Visitors arrive by boat, catamaran, sailing yacht, helicopter or seaplane from Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island on day or overnight trips.

Hill Inlet, at the northern end, is the beach's most famous feature β€” a tidal inlet where sand and water create constantly shifting patterns of turquoise, white, and emerald seen from the lookout above. The colours and swirl patterns change with every tide and season, meaning no two photographs are ever quite the same. Despite significant visitor numbers, the scale of the beach ensures it rarely feels crowded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Whitehaven's sand special?
The sand is 98% pure silica quartz β€” extremely fine and bright white. Unlike most mineral sands, silica doesn't absorb heat, so the sand remains cool even under direct tropical sun. The sand also doesn't scratch watch faces or camera lenses. It's considered some of the purest sand in the world.
Is it safe to swim at Whitehaven Beach?
Generally yes, but awareness of stingers is important. Box jellyfish (sea stingers) are present roughly October to May. Swim inside the stinger nets when provided or wear a full-body stinger suit. There are no lifeguards β€” swimming is at your own risk. Crocodiles are not present in the Whitsundays.
How long should I plan for a visit?
Day trips from Airlie Beach typically allow 2–4 hours at the beach. An overnight sailing trip allows a more relaxed experience, including the magical hour at Hill Inlet in early morning light. More committed visitors book 3-day Whitsundays sailing trips that also visit the outer reef.
