About Coogee Beach

Coogee Beach is Sydney's most family-friendly eastern suburbs beach — and arguably its most underrated. While Bondi attracts the majority of tourist traffic, Coogee, just 4 km to the south, offers many of the same assets with fewer crowds, a greener hinterland, and a genuine neighbourhood feel. The beach itself is a beautiful arc of golden sand, protected by headlands that make the swimming conditions generally calmer and more forgiving than Bondi.

Coogee has two ocean baths — McIver's Ladies Baths (one of the last female-only ocean baths in Australia, in use since 1876) and Giles Baths, a general-admission ocean pool carved into the rocks. The grassy Dunningham Reserve runs behind the beach and provides picnic areas, free BBQs, and a children's playground — making Coogee a perfect full-day destination for families.

The beach sits at the southern end of the famous Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk (6 km) — one of Sydney's finest free experiences. The Coogee dining scene has seen a renaissance in recent years, with an excellent selection of restaurants and cafés on Coogee Bay Road. The beach is also home to the annual CoggFest community festival each December.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Coogee Beach good for families?
Yes — one of Sydney's best family beaches. The waters are calmer than Bondi, the beach is wide and sandy, the reserve behind has free BBQs and a playground, and the ocean baths are safe for children. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards in the swimming season.
Can I start the coastal walk at Coogee?
Yes — the Bondi to Coogee walk can be done in either direction, but starting at Coogee and walking north to Bondi is popular as it ends with Bondi's facilities. The walk takes 2–3 hours and passes Gordons Bay, Clovelly, Bronte Beach and Tamarama before arriving at Bondi.
Where can I snorkel near Coogee?
Gordons Bay, about 10 minutes' walk north of Coogee, has an official underwater nature trail and is one of Sydney's most popular snorkelling sites. The rocky sections at both ends of Coogee Beach itself are also good for exploring rock pools at low tide.
