About Bondi Beach

Bondi Beach is Australia's most famous stretch of sand — a kilometre-long golden crescent anchored at its southern end by the legendary Bondi Icebergs ocean pool, and framed by Norfolk Island pines and the buzzing Bondi Pavilion. Whether you come to surf, swim, people-watch, or simply absorb the atmosphere, Bondi delivers an experience that is genuinely world-class and uniquely Australian.

The surf at Bondi is broken into three distinct zones patrolled by Surf Life Saving Australia's volunteer lifeguards — swimming allowed between the red and yellow flags. The northern end is mellower for beginners, the south a stronger beach break favoured by intermediate to advanced surfers. Bondi's lifeguards are among the world's most experienced and visible, and the beach maintains an extremely strong safety record. Surf schools operate year-round for those wanting to learn.

Beyond the beach itself, Bondi is a neighbourhood worth exploring. Campbell Parade is lined with cafés, restaurants and surf shops; the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk (6 km, 2–3 hours) is one of Sydney's finest experiences, tracing the clifftops past Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Gordons Bay; and the Bondi Markets on weekends attract locals and visitors alike. Bondi in summer is electric — come early, swim between the flags, and stay for a sunset beer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bondi Beach safe to swim at?
Yes — always swim between the red and yellow flags patrolled by lifeguards. Outside the flags the water can have strong rips. Patrolled hours are generally 7am–7pm in peak summer season. Bondi has one of the best-resourced lifesaving services in the world.
When is the best time to visit Bondi?
November through March for warm swimming weather — water temps reach 22–24°C. Christmas Day on Bondi is a Sydney institution, drawing huge crowds. Weekday mornings in summer give you the best combination of good conditions and manageable crowds. The beach is pleasant year-round but water is cold (17°C) in winter.
How long does the Bondi to Coogee walk take?
Generally 2–3 hours at a leisurely pace covering 6 km. The walk passes Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly, Gordons Bay and Coogee. It's one of Sydney's finest free experiences — largely paved and accessible, with cafe stops at each beach. Best done in the morning for the light.
