Pinamar is Buenos Aires province's most prestigious beach resort — a masterplan town designed in the 1940s by architect Jorge Bunge, who planted thousands of pines and built chalets and villas behind the dunes, creating a unique Atlantic resort aesthetic that blends Nordic woodland with Argentine beach culture. Today it's the summer destination of choice for Buenos Aires professionals, families, and media personalities who prefer a calmer, more elegant alternative to Mar del Plata.
The beach at Pinamar central is wide, sandy, and often backed by majestic stone pines whose roots lock the dunes in place. The sand is finer and whiter than further south, and the Atlantic here is cleaner with good body-surfing waves. The balnearios in Pinamar are among the most upmarket on the Argentine coast — many are true beach clubs with pools, restaurants, and sports facilities. Evening parades along the beachfront avenue are a Pinamar summer institution.
The town behind the beach is itself a pleasure — a network of pine-shaded streets with boutiques, artisanal ice cream shops, excellent restaurants, and weekend markets. Cycling is the main mode of transport, with dedicated paths throughout. The combination of stylish town and excellent beach makes Pinamar one of Argentina's most complete coastal destinations.
340 km from Buenos Aires via Ruta 2. Bus from Buenos Aires terminal takes 4.5 hours. Pinamar has a small airport (EZE connections in summer). Once in town, rent a bike — it's the preferred local transport.
December to March. January is peak season (most expensive). February and early March offer a good balance of warm weather, good beach conditions, and slightly lower prices.
Rent a bike on arrival — it's the best way to get around. Book accommodation and balnearios well in advance for January. The evening paseo (promenade) starts around 7pm — join local families for ice cream and strolling.
