About Ostende Beach

Ostende is the quiet secret of the Pinamar coast — a tiny beach village 6 km south of its glamorous neighbour, with barely a thousand permanent residents and an ambience as far from Argentine summer madness as it's possible to get. Founded by Belgian settlers in 1908 and named after the Belgian resort of the same name, Ostende retains that European village character: wide sandy streets, stone-pine forests, weatherboard chalets, and a beach so undeveloped it feels almost wild.

The beach at Ostende is continuous with Pinamar's but feels entirely different — there are fewer balnearios, wider gaps between carpas, and long stretches where you can walk for 20 minutes without passing another person. The dunes behind the beach in Ostende are among the tallest on the Argentine coast, and walking over them into the pine forest behind is a wonderful escape from any beach crowd. The Atlantic here is the same cold, energetic surf as Pinamar.

Literary visitors note that Ostende was the setting for the famous Argentine novel "El Hotel Ostende" — the town's only hotel, a rambling century-old wooden building directly on the beach, is one of the most atmospheric places to stay on the entire Argentine coast. Afternoon tea on its terrace while watching Atlantic waves break below is a memory that stays with visitors long after they return to Buenos Aires.
