Gjipe Beach is one of Albania's most dramatic and unforgettable coastal destinations — a pristine pebble cove nestled at the mouth of a deep canyon, accessible only by a 30-minute hiking trail or by boat. The towering limestone cliffs that frame the beach rise vertically from the water's edge, creating an amphitheatre of rock that feels almost otherworldly.
The hike down to the beach follows the Gjipe Canyon, a stunning gorge carved through the limestone over millennia. The trail passes through Mediterranean scrub and rocky terrain before emerging at the sea, where emerald waters lap against smooth white pebbles. Snorkelling here is exceptional — the underwater visibility is extraordinary, and the rocky cliffs create sheltered areas teeming with marine life.
Because of its remote location, Gjipe has remained one of the most unspoiled beaches on the entire Albanian Riviera. A small seasonal beach bar may operate in peak summer, but visitors should bring their own water and supplies. The effort to reach Gjipe is richly rewarded — this is raw, unbridled Mediterranean beauty at its finest, and a must-visit for adventurous travellers.
Gjipe Beach is not accessible for those with mobility difficulties. The hiking trail is steep and rocky, requiring moderate fitness. Sturdy footwear is essential for the descent.
Park at the signposted trailhead on the SH8 road between Dhërmi and Himara. The hike takes about 30 minutes downhill (longer returning). Alternatively, take a boat from Himara or Dhërmi in summer.
