Mediterranean clarity meets the Rif Mountains on Morocco's spectacular northern coast — some of the clearest blue water in all Africa.
Al Hoceima is a small Moroccan city on the Mediterranean coast where the Rif Mountains drop sharply into the sea. The resulting coastline is dramatic — deep bays, rocky headlands, and extraordinarily clear turquoise water that ranks among the most transparent in the Mediterranean basin. The city beach of Quemado is right in the bay below the town; the wilder beaches of the Al Hoceima National Park extend along the protected coast west and east of the city, accessible only on foot or by boat. This is authentic, unhurried Morocco — not a resort town but a real working city with a long Berber-Riffian culture and an exceptional natural setting.
Al Hoceima Airport (AHU) has connections to Casablanca, the Canaries, and seasonal European routes. By road from Fez: approx. 4 hours on the mountain road through the Rif. Regular buses from Casablanca, Fez and Tetouan.
June–September for beach weather, warm calm sea. July–August is peak season — Moroccan diaspora returns and beaches are busy. May and October are excellent for clear, uncrowded conditions. The National Park is beautiful year-round for hiking.
Al Hoceima retains an authentic Moroccan character — it is not a resort town. Explore the medina and souk. Boat trips to the National Park beaches (Torres and others) leave from the port — a recommended excursion. The city's seafood restaurants are outstanding.
